Mount Carmel’s return to the state playoffs for the first time in 11 years highlighted Mario Medina’s leadership. As a senior catcher, Medina has kept the team calm and focused throughout the season. Winning the state meant everything to him.
It was a big game and a special moment,
said Medina. I’ve been with these guys for four years, and they are like my brothers. There’s nowhere else I’d want to be.
During the semifinal against Libertyville at Slammers Stadium in Joliet, Medina recorded one hit and executed a crucial defensive play. Despite his efforts, Mount Carmel fell 3-1 to the defending Class 4A champions. Connor Elenteny, a Notre Dame recruit, struck out five over six innings. Elenteny allowed three earned runs on six hits.
Key contributions came from others as well. Joey Ireland, committed to Illinois, doubled and secured an RBI walk. Triton recruit Logan Fernandez added a base hit. Mount Carmel will face Naperville Central in the third-place match on Saturday.
Although trailing the Wildcats 3-0 entering the seventh inning, Mount Carmel rallied. They loaded the bases after three walks; Pancho Vazquez, hit by a pitch, added a score. Ultimately, despite the effort, Fernandez’s fly-out to center ended the game.
We almost found a way there at the end. I was proud of the guys, we fought all year,
Ireland commented.
One of the game’s pivotal moments involved Medina and senior right fielder Haiden Lajcin. In the third inning, Lajcin threw a fly ball to home, where Medina applied a swift tag to halt Braden Tolzien before scoring.
I saw the ball and thought ‘Four, four, four,’
Medina said. The throw was perfect, and I had to dive in for the tag.
Coach Brian Hurry praised the play. That was an unreal play by Haiden and Mario,
Hurry noted.
Medina’s career has been built on such plays, guiding a successful pitching staff. I’ve tried to step up as a leader this year,
Medina expressed. Elenteny affirmed Medina’s influence, describing him as the team’s biggest leader.
Mount Carmel’s senior players, many with three or four years on varsity, have left a significant impact. They’ve made their mark on a program full of tradition and pride,
Hurry reflected.
