In the Welsh village of Mumbles, hundreds of fans gathered to honor the memory of the late singer Bonnie Tyler on Saturday. Her coffin, draped in a Welsh flag, was brought home as fans and locals lined the streets.
Bonnie Tyler, famous for the 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” passed away last month in Portugal at age 75. She had been hospitalized in Faro for emergency intestinal surgery. Fans from across the UK and beyond came to pay their respects in Mumbles, near Swansea.
One fan, Carys Edwards, 18, expressed a deep connection to Tyler, saying, “She was always coming home and making sure that she came back to her fans in Wales. Her songs really did touch a lot of people here in Wales; we loved her a lot.”
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Bonnie Tyler grew up as a coal miner’s daughter in public housing. She earned three Grammy nominations and represented Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, securing the 19th position. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II honored her as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contribution to music, especially due to her iconic song “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” This ballad topped the charts in both Britain and the United States and has accumulated over 1 billion streams, with a boost from real eclipses in 2017, 2024, and recently during this week’s solar eclipse.
Aside from “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Tyler was also well-known for hits like “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero,” from the “Footloose” soundtrack. A private celebration of her life will occur at a church in Swansea on Monday as she makes a final journey through her hometown of Skewen.
