On Tuesday, ultraconservative lawmakers stalled the progress of a critical procedural measure, demanding action on voting legislation endorsed by President Trump.
Speaker Mike Johnson has struggled to unite his majority on essential measures regarding the Pentagon, spending, and other critical issues. In a significant move, far-right House Republicans obstructed the annual defense policy bill, reinforcing their legislative blockade aimed at pushing for voting restrictions that President Trump has championed.
This action has largely incapacitated the House for two consecutive weeks, delivering another setback to Speaker Mike Johnson, who is trying to manage his divided majority on crucial legislation. The conflict stems from Mr. Trump’s insistence that Congress pass a comprehensive measure to limit mail-in voting and establish stringent voter registration and identification rules.
While most Republicans support the legislation generally, it lacks sufficient backing to advance through the Senate. Many G.O.P. members across both chambers argue that Congress should focus on other priorities. However, Mr. Trump remains adamant, and a faction of conservative Congress members is refusing to engage in any other legislative business until the voting measure is addressed, effectively stalling the House floor to pressure the Senate.
The confrontation on Tuesday arose after these lawmakers insisted that House Republican leaders attach the voting bill to the defense policy measure. Mr. Johnson sought to resolve the issue through a tactic that would merge the two measures post-passage of the Pentagon legislation. After meeting with the speaker amidst the blockade last week, Mr. Trump took to social media, encouraging resistant Republicans not to shut down the House floor and hinder their own party’s legislative efforts.
