Farewell to Bonnie Tyler

Hundreds of fans lined the streets of a Welsh coastal town on Saturday to bid farewell to the late singer Bonnie Tyler. Her casket was transported home, covered with a Welsh flag. The Grammy-nominated pop star, cherished globally for her ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” passed away last month in a Portuguese hospital at 75.

Tyler was admitted to a hospital in Faro in May, where she owned a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. Residents and admirers from the UK and beyond gathered in Mumbles, near Swansea, to witness the hearse carrying her casket. Several stood outside her former residence or left floral tributes there.

“She always returned home, always came back to her fans in Wales,” remarked 18-year-old Carys Edwards. “Her songs truly touched many people here in Wales; we held her dearly.”

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler was the daughter of a coal miner and grew up in public housing with an outdoor bathroom in Skewen, Wales, about 11 kilometers from Swansea. She was raised with three sisters and two brothers.

The singer earned three Grammy nominations and represented Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, finishing 19th. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II honored her as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to music, primarily due to “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”

The ballad topped charts in Britain and the United States, surpassing 1 billion streams, boosted by real eclipses in 2017, 2024, and most recently during this week’s solar eclipse. Tyler was also recognized for hits like “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero,” from the “Footloose” soundtrack.

A ceremony celebrating Tyler’s life will take place on Monday at a church in Swansea for family and friends, followed by a final journey through her hometown of Skewen.
