DHS stated that an officer felt compelled to shoot due to concerns for public safety. However, videos capturing the shooting have yet to emerge, prompting Maine officials to seek assistance from state law enforcement to clarify the situation.

Senator Angus King expressed skepticism over a solely federal investigation, highlighting a lack of trust in the FBI or DHS’s credibility. He emphasized the need for state involvement in the inquiry.

The handling of these fatalities echoes past challenges, notably how Minneapolis authorities initially presented the George Floyd case in 2020. This led to diminished trust in police and prompted many local departments to adopt a strategy of frequent factual updates.
