Fatal Shooting in Montreal Claims Lives of Police Officer and Civilian

On Monday, a tragic incident occurred in Montreal, resulting in the deaths of a police officer and a civilian. The suspect involved was also killed. The motive for the attack remains unknown.

The shooting took place in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood, known for its kosher restaurants and supermarkets, popular among Montreal’s Jewish community. The locale features various shops, a residential building, and a supermarket.

Montreal police expressed profound sorrow, confirming the death of an officer in the line of duty via a statement on X. They advised residents to steer clear of the area. The incident began around 11:30 a.m. ET, drawing significant police presence, including a helicopter.

Montreal Police Service Chief Fady Dagher spoke to reporters but could not specify the civilian’s identity or their religious background. He was uncertain who was responsible for the civilian’s death. Dagher stated the suspect was swiftly shot, leaving unknown details about the civilian’s demise.

Another officer sustained serious injuries, and Dagher expressed strong support for her recovery. The deceased officer remains unidentified, described by Dagher as exceptionally dedicated and passionate about his work.

This marks the first time since 2002 that the SPVM, Montreal’s police agency, has lost an officer in duty. Dagher assured there is no ongoing threat to the community, although he could not confirm if the attack was an ambush.
