This Father’s Day marks a significant first for me: experiencing it without my father, Leo E. Perino. He passed away peacefully at the end of May 2026, just 29 days into his retirement, at the age of 79. He was a dedicated worker and a loving father to my sister and me. His presence had a profound impact on our lives.
Influential Lessons from My Father
As I observe my friends raising their daughters, I’m reminded of how my own father contributed to my success and happiness. Here are five key lessons he imparted to us.
1. Belief in Equality
Growing up in the 1970s, during the rise of the “girl power” movement, my father never preached about equality; he exemplified it. He consistently reminded my sister Angie and me that we could achieve anything we set our minds to, regardless of our gender. We never felt limited by societal expectations.
His belief in us was reflected in my favorite T-shirt, which proclaimed, “Anything boys can do, girls can do better.” That simple message helped shape our confidence.
2. Importance of Education and Reading
My father fostered a love for reading early on. By third grade, I was tasked with reading The Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post before his return from work, choosing two articles for discussion. This practice sparked a lifelong love of reading and critical thinking.
Through our discussions, he taught me not only to read but also to think independently and critically. These lessons have been invaluable throughout my life.
3. Encouraging Expression
My father recognized the importance of honing my ability to express my thoughts confidently. From an early age, he encouraged discussions on news and politics, offering support and gentle debate. This foundation boosted my comfort in voicing my opinions in professional settings, including at Fox News Channel.
Fathers who invest in their daughters’ communication skills contribute to their future confidence and success.
4. Practicing Faith
My sister and I often debated the timing of Sunday church services, but our participation was never in question. Our parents instilled strong values and a belief in a higher power, which has provided support during times of sorrow and joy.
5. Leading Without Judgment
After graduate school, I realized that my degree didn’t align with my career aspirations. I feared disappointing my father, but his response was reassuring. He simply said, “That’s great. You’ll figure it out.”
This response echoed in my sister’s experience when she faced a major decision. He asked, “How can I help?” His support never wavered, making him a pillar of comfort throughout our lives.
My father’s passing left unfinished pages in his book, yet we take solace in having experienced his full life. To all fathers guiding their daughters with love and understanding, know that your influence is immeasurable. Thank you for being the foundation we rely on.
