World Cup enthusiasm is waning among immigrant communities in the United States due to federal agents’ presence at games and fan events nationwide.
Officials have assured that widespread immigration actions are not intended at World Cup events. Markwayne Mullin, Department of Homeland Security secretary, stated in a TV interview, “We’re not there to go round up mass individuals.”
Despite these assurances, the aggressive immigration measures by the Trump administration over the last year have left many anxious. Tensions rose further after reports surfaced of heightened scrutiny for fans and participants entering the U.S., such as a Somali soccer referee denied entry.
“The fear and anxiety around the World Cup are justified,” said Murad Awawdeh of the New York Immigration Coalition. “These agencies cannot be trusted.”
In Los Angeles, one of the host cities, Trump had previously deployed 5,000 troops to control immigration protests. County Sheriff Robert Luna contacted the local homeland security office regarding rumors of immigration raids at World Cup events. He was assured this was not happening. “I trust the accuracy of their information,” Luna mentioned. “If that changes, we face more challenges.”
