Federal Court Temporarily Blocks Anti-Weaponization Fund Amid Legal Challenge
Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche recently testified during a Senate appropriations hearing on May 19, 2026, in Washington, D.C. A notable moment in the hearing focused on the Justice Department’s response to a court ruling regarding the Trump administration’s controversial anti-weaponization fund.
On Monday, the Justice Department confirmed it will comply with a federal court decision suspending the $1.776 billion fund. This fund, introduced by the Trump administration, aimed to aid individuals claiming federal government weaponization against them, an idea some Trump supporters strongly endorsed during President Biden’s tenure.
The fund faced opposition from Democratic lawmakers, who labeled it a “slush fund” tailored for Trump supporters. Even some Republican lawmakers showed hesitancy in backing the initiative. The Eastern District of Virginia’s federal judge recently halted the fund’s establishment following a lawsuit from Democracy Forward and other parties.
The Department of Justice made a statement on social media platform X, expressing strong disagreement with the judge’s decision. Despite their disagreement, they confirmed adherence to the court’s ruling.
The initial proposal for the fund emerged from a settlement between President Trump and the Justice Department, linked to Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS over leaked tax returns. The court is still deciding whether to extend the temporary halt. A hearing is scheduled for June 12 to address the issue.
In a separate case, a Florida judge, Kathleen Williams, who previously managed Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS, is reconsidering the matter. Despite a settlement being announced, Williams expressed doubts about the legitimacy of the case since President Trump was involved on both sides. She indicated the need to determine whether the court was misled or “the victim of a fraud.” Trump’s legal team must respond by June 12.
