Entrepreneurs Thrive Through Indiana University Programs
Leandra Roche, Noah Miller, and Kayla Oberholtzer are among the thriving entrepreneurs from Indiana University Northwest’s programs. Roche opened High Definition Hair Design Salon and Academy in Merrillville, emphasizing total hair care. Miller established Mr. Miller’s Mobile Detailing, serving Northwest Indiana. Both benefited from the SEED and IU Innovates programs.
Programs Fueling Growth
The Supporting and Empowering Entrepreneurial Development (SEED) program is an 11-month initiative. It collaborates with Notre Dame’s Urban Poverty and Business Initiative. Indiana University Northwest Business Academy Director Jana Szostek highlights that it teaches business principles and offers mentorship. Completed by Roche, Miller, and others, it is pivotal in nurturing local talent.
IU Innovates, a semester-long program based on SEED, supports aspiring company founders. Oberholtzer graduated from this program along with other entrepreneurs.
Entrepreneurial Journeys
Roche, with 30 years of hairstyling experience, realized her passion for high definition hair care for naturally curly hair. She transitioned from a home-based setup to opening her own salon. Her services include personalized hair care treatments tailored to client needs.
Miller initiated his mobile detailing business in February 2025. He invested in a work vehicle equipped for professional detailing at clients’ locations. His services range from basic washes to advanced treatments like ceramic coating.
Oberholtzer, studying business administration at IUN, launched Kaymae Photos LLC focusing on portrait photography. Her business offers a personalized experience from consultation to final edits.
Gains from the SEED Program
“The program took me out of survival mode,” Roche said, reflecting on her growth in business management skills.
She aims to expand into cosmetology after learning essential growth steps.
Miller valued networking and business fundamentals taught in SEED. His goal is to expand his detailing business with independent work crews.
Oberholtzer gained insights into marketing, pricing, and business planning in this supportive environment shared with other entrepreneurs. She appreciated the chance to engage with like-minded individuals.
