Bullet holes were visible in a car in Austin, Texas, marking a location where a federal immigration agent shot and injured a man on Sunday. Austin Councilmember Mike Siegel was at the scene, located near his home, and conveyed these details to NPR. The vehicle, with at least two bullet holes on the passenger side, was captured in photos from the scene.
A video shared by Councilmember Siegel showed an uninjured civilian in handcuffs at the site of the incident. According to Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, the individual who was shot is in serious but stable condition.
“This is a terrible incident that we were hoping to avoid in our community,”
Siegel stated, expressing hope for an investigation into the event and urging for the prosecution of any crimes committed by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer involved.
The reasons behind the shooting remain unknown as the Department of Homeland Security has yet to respond to NPR’s request for comments. Community members gathered at the scene to protest, voicing their grievances against the violent encounter involving ICE agents.
Mayor Watson expressed his anger and frustration regarding the incident, indicating a lack of surprise due to similar events occurring in cities like Chicago and Minneapolis where substantial immigration enforcement operations have taken place. Texas, under President Trump’s administration, has collaborated closely with federal immigration authorities, with the Texas Department of Public Safety working alongside ICE.
Congressman Greg Casar, representing Austin, demanded an independent investigation into the shooting. He referenced previous incidents involving ICE, including the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis, where video evidence contradicted ICE’s claims.
“We can see the lies with our own eyes. We will demand truth, transparency, and accountability,”
Casar stated, pushing for clarity and responsibility from the authorities.
This incident marks at least the second ICE-related shooting in Texas in 2025. In July, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national and father of three, was fatally shot by federal immigration agents in Houston during an attempt to execute a traffic stop. He was not the intended target of the warrant. Earlier in March, Ruben Ray Martinez was the first individual killed by immigration agents in South Padre Island, Texas, following President Trump’s second term commencement.
