FIFA has confirmed that Folarin Balogun is cleared to play in the USMNT’s World Cup round-of-16 match against Belgium after suspending his one-game red-card ban. The decision followed Balogun’s recent red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina for a foul on Tarik Muharemovic. According to Article 10.5 of FIFA’s rules, this typically results in a one-game suspension.
Despite FIFA’s rules, which do not allow an appeal on red cards, Balogun’s suspension will not apply. This is due to FIFA’s statement indicating his eligibility for the match at Lumen Field in Seattle.
The FIFA disciplinary committee has imposed a one-match suspension for breaches of articles 14 and 66 of the FIFA disciplinary code on Folarin Balogun. However, the sanction is suspended for a year. If Balogun commits another similar offense during this period, the suspension will be enforced, along with any new penalties.
President Donald Trump praised FIFA’s decision on Truth Social. Meanwhile, the USMNT learned about the suspension during their bus ride to training. Christian Pulisic noted that the news boosted team morale, while defender Chris Richards emphasized the players’ initial disbelief until confirmation appeared on social media.
Article 27 of FIFA’s disciplinary code allows suspending sanctions like Balogun’s under specific conditions. For instance, Cristiano Ronaldo previously received a similar reprieve during the World Cup.
Balogun, who has consistently played for the US, is key to their success. He scored twice against Paraguay, rested against Turkey, and returned to score again during their victory over Bosnia. Despite not immediately receiving a red card during the game, a review led to his dismissal for serious foul play.
The International Football Association Board’s rules define serious foul play as tackles that endanger opponents’ safety. Despite the red card ruling, the decision to dismiss Balogun faced backlash from teammates, fans, and analysts. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino disputed the severity of the foul while Christian Pulisic supported his teammate’s efforts.
Balogun’s availability for the match against Belgium at 8pm ET marks a crucial opportunity for the USMNT. As their pivotal scorer, Balogun enhances the team’s dynamics and performance.
Analysis by Senior Writer Tom Bogert
Balogun’s eligibility is surprising yet vital for the USMNT. Earlier, U.S. Soccer stated FIFA’s confirmation of a one-game ban, with no extra penalties. The Athletic later revealed Balogun’s new status, shocking many.
Balogun is the team’s top scorer and forward. Without him, potential replacements like Ricardo Pepi, Haji Wright, or Christian Pulisic were considered less favorable. Balogun’s skills, such as his finishing, movement, and physical play, are unmatched within the team. His absence would have left a gap difficult to fill. Fortunately for coach Pochettino, Balogun’s presence negates the need for adjustments.
