Jessica Sanchez, a 40-year-old mother of two, faced years of dismissed symptoms before being diagnosed with rectal adenocarcinoma. Her symptoms, including constipation, excessive bleeding, night sweats, and extreme fatigue, were neglected until a colonoscopy uncovered a tumor. Biopsies confirmed rectal adenocarcinoma, the most common type of rectal cancer, originating in the glandular cells of the large intestine.
Sanchez shared, “Receiving news of my tumor after waking up, I immediately felt validated and confirmation of what my intuition felt. But at the same time, scared and frustrated, knowing how long I suffered with symptoms.” The impact of her health struggles was intensified by her responsibilities as a mother of two special-needs children. She described the frustration of having no energy, poor sleep, and improper body functioning, regardless of lifestyle changes.
After the colonoscopy biopsy, she faced the stressful wait for a follow-up appointment to learn the results. Now, CT and MRI scans will help determine the cancer’s stage and its spread.
Reflecting on her journey, Sanchez acknowledged often accepting reassurances that her symptoms were minor issues. Her instincts, however, suggested otherwise. “I regret not advocating fiercely, demanding another opinion, requesting they document their refusal in my charts,” she expressed. She urged women to be vocal and assertive in seeking healthcare answers.
Throughout her uncertainty, Sanchez found strength in her friends and family’s unwavering support. Witnessing their willingness to “drop everything” to assist her has been deeply meaningful. “I’m learning to hold space for both deep sadness and immeasurable gratitude,” she reflected.
By sharing her story online, she aims to raise awareness about medical dismissal and encourage others to speak out. Although new to openly sharing her struggles, she recognizes the value in transparency to foster connection and help others.
“I’ve never been one to cry on the internet, but I’ve spent most of my life suffering in silence,” Sanchez admitted. Her pursuit of helping others requires overcoming her fear of vulnerability.
