Firefighters Battle Wildfires Across France and Greece
In southwestern France, firefighters have managed to control a vast wildfire, allowing approximately 198,000 people to return home. This event may be the largest peacetime evacuation in France. Meanwhile, renewed fires have forced thousands from their homes elsewhere in France and Greece.
In the Var region, a fire that was previously thought to have stopped quickly spread over 4 square miles in just six hours. This development highlights how quickly firefighting progress can be reversed, with simultaneous crises in Europe stretching emergency services.
Europe’s climate is warming faster than any other continent, heating at twice the global average since the 1980s. Rising temperatures and prolonged droughts dry vegetation, which makes it easier for fires to spread rapidly.
Cap Ferret Remains Evacuated
The Gironde fire has devastated 162 square miles of pine forest near Bordeaux. Although firefighters have contained the blaze, active sectors and buried hot spots persist. Several communities remain deserted, and authorities have kept the Cap Ferret peninsula evacuated due to risks of the fire flaring up again.
Lt. Col. Eric Pitault explained that the fire is still not fixed, but crews have conducted tactical burns to consume vegetation ahead of the active sectors. Around 149 miles of fire edges remain, where heat underground could erupt.
Beyond impacting people and property, the fire has also affected millions of animals, as reported by Allain Bougrain-Dubourg, president of France’s League for the Protection of Birds.
Fire Roars Back in Southern France
In the Var, while defensive lines around the Gros Bessillon fire held overnight, the fire remains active. Approximately 2,500 people cannot return home, with 1,300 firefighters deployed to tackle the flames.
Temperatures ranging from 35 to 39 degrees Celsius (95 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit) have been forecast, with twenty French departments under heat warnings, increasing the forest-fire risk.
Greek Fires Driven by Gale-Force Winds
In Greece, hundreds of firefighters continue protecting Porto Germeno, a resort on the Gulf of Corinth. Gale-force winds have driven flames through pine forests, prompting evacuation orders.
A pristine forest near Porto Germeno has suffered severe damage. Local resident Minas Tzortzanis described the destruction as total and noted that homes, trees, and animals have been affected.
Theodore Giannaros, a wildfire meteorologist, estimated 15 to 19 square miles have been affected, although an official burned-area figure is pending. Nearly 500 firefighters from France and Romania are assisting local crews, supported by water-dropping aircraft.
New fires erupted in Greece, prompting evacuation alerts east of Nafpaktos. Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Evangelos Tournas stated that strong winds are creating challenging conditions for firefighting aircraft.
