Firefighters Contain Brentwood Brush Fire Amid Heightened Fire Risks
Firefighters successfully halted the progress of a brush fire in Brentwood, close to the Department of Veterans Affairs’ West Los Angeles Campus. The fire ignited early Wednesday at around 2:50 a.m., covering approximately 1.5 acres before containment efforts proved successful. No injuries or structural damages occurred. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
The first Santa Ana wind event of the season is expected to begin Wednesday and intensify on Thursday, increasing fire dangers in Los Angeles County. Meteorologist Ryan Kittell from the National Weather Service in Oxnard reports that between Thursday and Friday, Southern California will experience sustained winds of 20 to 40 mph. Gusts may reach 40 to 60 mph, and in certain mountainous regions, gusts could hit 70 mph.
The combination of strong winds, dry conditions, and high temperatures ranging from 85 to 95 degrees will heighten the fire risk, with humidity levels dropping to between 5% and 15% in many areas. Kittell noted, “In this environment where it’s going to be windy but also dry and warm, fire risk will be a major concern. Adding to that, the plants are very dry.”
In Malibu, officials have warned that Southern California Edison might implement power shutdowns in some neighborhoods to mitigate the threat of their lines sparking fires.
