Florida Democratic Senate Nominee Angie Nixon Faces Criticism Over Capitalist or Socialist Identity
Florida Democratic Senate nominee Angie Nixon encountered challenges during an interview when asked to define her economic ideology. This led to criticism from Republican Sen. Ashley Moody’s campaign as Florida’s Senate race reached its final week.
During an interview with Politico’s Dasha Burns, Nixon hesitated to categorize herself as either a capitalist or a socialist. Although previously identifying as a capitalist, she joined the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). When pressed, Nixon expressed uncertainty multiple times.
“I don’t know. I don’t know. Like, I don’t know,” Nixon stated on The Conversation.
Nixon, identifying herself as a former single mother, emphasized her priority of ensuring others do not face struggles like hers.
Criticism followed from Cameron Gambini, a spokesperson for Moody. He questioned Nixon’s ideological stance and highlighted a separate incident involving her comments about Cuba.
Cameron Gambini: “Angie Nixon voluntarily signed up to be a member of the Democrat Socialists,” Gambini remarked. “Now, she’s regretting her decision. Socialist Angie is a radical lunatic who will never step foot on the Senate floor. Case closed.”
When asked by CBS News about Cuba, Nixon stated, “You know, that is what people have told me. I have never been to Cuba, and so I will have to take their word for it.” She later clarified that she trusted Cubans who described their government as a dictatorship. CBS News amended their earlier posts to reflect this.
Nixon rebuked CBS News for mischaracterizing her response, stating it as misinformation.
Andrew Kolvet from Turning Point USA criticized Nixon’s response to Politico, suggesting political strategies influenced her answer. He questioned her grasp of the economic system.
Andrew Kolvet: “Some pollster or political consultant probably told her socialism doesn’t sell in Florida,” Kolvet suggested. “She seems to contend capitalism comes simply by being within America’s borders.”
Throughout the interview, Nixon conveyed discomfort with labels, identifying herself instead as a “humanist.” She reiterated her identity as a “lifelong Democrat,” emphasizing her support for social safety nets, noting her experience as a small business owner.
Nixon’s reasons for joining the DSA included their community efforts, particularly when governments faced shutdowns affecting SNAP benefits.
Her current stance varied from an August interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, where she embraced capitalism yet joined the DSA. She rejected several of the organization’s political proposals.
