Former ABC News Correspondent Discusses Network’s Liberal Bias

Former ABC News correspondent Terry Moran acknowledged on Friday that ABC News leaned liberal and struggled to understand President Donald Trump’s supporters due to a lack of political viewpoint diversity in its newsroom. This statement was made during an interview with Michael C. Moynihan, co-host of ‘The Fifth Column’ podcast.

Moynihan asked Moran directly if ABC News was a liberal institution. Moran affirmed this, saying, ‘Yes. But I think, like many mainstream media outlets, it’s due to a lack of viewpoint diversity.’ Moran noted this absence of diversity was a significant hurdle in covering Trump, as ‘nobody had voted for him.’

Moran shared that he tried to contest the dominant perspective within the newsroom by sending internal emails advocating for fair coverage of Trump. He mentioned receiving responses from some staff, including engineers and occasional producers, who expressed gratitude for his efforts.

After Moran’s departure from ABC News, a staffer commented to Fox News Digital that he had conflicts with liberal colleagues internally. The staffer expressed regret over the situation, describing Moran as a former friend and colleague, but noted that the social media post left no options for the network.

ABC News chose not to renew Moran’s contract following a since-deleted post where he labeled Trump and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller as ‘world-class haters.’ The network stated the post violated their policies and reiterated their commitment to impartial reporting.

An ABC spokesperson commented, ‘We are at the end of our agreement with Terry Moran and based on his recent post, which clearly violated ABC News policies, we decided not to renew it. At ABC News, we uphold the highest standards of objectivity, fairness, and professionalism and remain dedicated to straightforward, trusted journalism.’

The ABC staffer further informed Fox News Digital that the network’s swift action was necessary to prevent a loss of viewers amid growing distrust in legacy media. The staffer stated, ‘We took it seriously and acted quickly.’

Moran, in his remarks post-ABC departure, admitted that the lack of Trump supporters within the network hindered their ability to understand significant portions of the country.

During a recent interview, Moran distinguished between fairness and objectivity while discussing the coverage of Trump’s efforts to redefine long-established political norms. He opined, ‘There is no such thing as objectivity in journalism. I’d argue that my work at ABC News was excruciatingly fair.’

Less than six weeks before leaving ABC News, Moran conducted a challenging Oval Office interview with Trump, marking the president’s first 100 days back in office. During this interview, Trump rebuffed Moran, expressing distrust and accusing him of asking ‘fake questions.’

Fox News Digital reached out to ABC for additional comments but did not receive an immediate response.
