Fort Sheridan National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony
Commemorating Fallen Heroes
The morning rain ceased, revealing a blue sky for the Fort Sheridan National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony on Sunday, May 24. This marked the 7th annual event in Lake Forest. Organized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the ceremony honored those who sacrificed their lives in military service. The event focused on commemoration, rather than celebration.
Honoring the Sacrifices
Among the attendees were veteran Stan Banash and his wife, Laura, from Norridge Park, who paid their respects at the grave of Michael Banash, a family member who served in World War II and Korea. National Cemetery Administration staff, Libertyville VFW Post 8741, Bugles Across America, and National Women Veterans United also participated.
“We struggle to find words to express our gratitude to the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines, who died defending our way of life,” said Kevin Griffiths, Master of Ceremonies.
Acknowledging Ongoing Efforts
Rochelle Crump, President of National Women Veterans United, delivered the Memorial Day Address. As a veteran of the Women’s Army Corps during the Vietnam War, she emphasized the continued sacrifices of military personnel. Crump reflected on her evolving journey as a woman in the military and the work that still remains.
“We are here because we care. There are sacrifices still being made every day,” Crump stated.
Community Involvement
Andy Barrie from Northwoods Wreaths LLC donated Memorial Day Planters to the cemetery. These planters, crafted from red, white, and blue petunias, were placed at gravesites by volunteers. They will remain until Monday, before being distributed to other local veterans’ organizations.
Remembering Through Tradition
Stan Banash emphasized the importance of understanding military history to avoid repeating past mistakes. He has visited his uncle’s gravesite on Memorial Day annually since 1968.
“Today we remember. We owe everything to those who served,” Banash said.
