EDINBURGH – Each year, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival attracts an eclectic mix of performances ranging from Shrek burlesque parodies to improvised shows with titles like David Elms Describes a Room. This past festival, its 79th edition, showcased over 4,200 productions, offering a wide array of comedy, theater, and cabaret. For producers, it is a fertile ground to discover fresh, unconventional talent.
Francesca Moody’s Intuition
Francesca Moody, a 38-year-old producer from London, has gained a reputation for spotting potential hits early. Moody brought to the Fringe both Fleabag and Baby Reindeer, which later became globally celebrated. Her decision-making process isn’t driven by strategy. Instead, as she revealed to NPR, it is guided by personal taste and intuition. Building a show solely with commercial success in mind, Moody believes, can compromise its authenticity.
“Ultimately, it’s all about my personal taste, because I’m a producer who is really led by their gut,” said Moody.
Moody’s involvement with Fleabag began when Phoebe Waller-Bridge had only a couple of pages written. Despite the uncertainty of the project’s direction, Moody felt a compelling “fizzy feeling.” She trusted that feeling, securing a venue for the show at the Fringe.
Fringe as a Creative Playground
For Moody, the Fringe offers a space to explore projects that might seem scrappy or incomplete but contain “magic.” Her journey with Fleabag taught her the importance of trust and deadlines in producing. During the development, Moody kept a calm demeanor and encouraged Waller-Bridge, even amid the stress of a looming deadline.
The Fringe has been a significant part of Moody’s career, starting from when she first interned there, handing out flyers. Over time, she moved from acting to producing, discovering greater fulfillment in this role. Producing allowed her to have more control over creative decisions and connect deeply with the projects she chose to support.
From the Fringe to Netflix
In 2019, Moody produced Baby Reindeer, written by Richard Gadd, drawing from his real-life experiences with a stalker. Her immediate urge to produce after reading the script led to its success at the Fringe and later adaptation into a Netflix series.
In recent years, Moody has backed diverse productions such as Crybabies: The Scaring, Roleplay, and Garry Starr: Classic Penguins. All possess a blend of comedy with underlying serious themes, each uniquely engaging audiences.
Challenges and Successes
Not every project Moody produces is a triumph. Berlusconi: A New Musical, a comedy about the former Italian Prime Minister, did not meet success. Despite such setbacks, Moody remains committed to exploring daring, non-conventional productions.
Her collaboration with Damien Warren-Smith on Garry Starr: Classic Penguins exemplifies her willingness to embrace eccentric and boundary-pushing work. The performance is a vivid testament to how Moody supports productions driven by creativity and curiosity.
Overall, Francesca Moody continues to support unique and inventive theatrical works that challenge conventions and resonate with audiences, demonstrating that her knack for selecting promising projects remains intact.
