The Philadelphia 76ers exhibited strong performance in their opening three games of the season, even without one of their key players on the court. However, on Sunday night, they encountered difficulties against the Detroit Pistons, an Eastern Conference contender, leading to a 106-93 loss.
Joel Embiid was absent to recuperate, forcing the 76ers to rethink their lineup. With limited backup options for the center position, veteran player LeBron James assumed the role. Despite facing challenges against the Pistons’ big men John Collins and Paul Reed, James managed to score 18 points, adding two rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
We got an MVP over here, I mean, I’m not here to have a sustainable role at the five. We got Joel Embiid on the team, you know? And so I don’t see it being a sustainable role, but it’s a role that we know we can tap into if we need it,said James. He further statedIf I was to say I was signing here to have a sustainable role at the five, I don’t think none of us here would want that.
Though it’s not unfamiliar for James to play multiple roles, at almost 42, playing center isn’t ideal, particularly if Embiid faces extended absence.
Adem Bona, another forward/center for the 76ers, contributed off the bench. He scored six points, pulled down 13 rebounds, and managed one assist. However, the Pistons dominated the game on the boards, outrebounding the 76ers 54-37, including 15 offensive rebounds. Only Bona had more than five rebounds beyond Embiid’s average of over 10.8 per game in his career.
Detroit maintained a lead of up to 21 points during the match against a previously unbeaten Philadelphia team that had mounted a comeback victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Notably, the 76ers utilized eight players, whereas the Pistons played 11.
Embiid expressed his willingness to play, but the decision to rest came from the coaching staff and management. This strategy may continue for both Embiid and James as they prioritize postseason readiness.
With a current record of 3-1, Philadelphia plans to recover against the Indiana Pacers, with the game scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. ET.
