France Pierron, a well-known French television host, issued an apology following her criticism of Belgium’s forward Jérémy Doku for his decision to leave the World Cup to be with his wife for the birth of their first child.
The controversy began when Doku announced his plan to fly to London, missing a World Cup game, to attend the birth. Pierron criticized this decision on the television show ‘L’Equipe de Choc,’ claiming that childbirth is ‘a disgusting moment where the dad is useless.’
Her comments faced widespread criticism, leading Pierron to post an apology on social media, acknowledging her remarks as personal and expressing regret for any offense caused. She emphasized that her opinions do not reflect a collective stance.
These remarks are solely my own and in no way reflect a collective position. I understand that they may have shocked, offended, or hurt some of you, and I am sorry for that.
French sports daily ‘L’Equipe,’ Pierron’s employer, disavowed her comments, apologizing to Doku, stating they do not align with the publication’s values.
Doku successfully made it to London in time for the birth of his son, Praise. Expressing gratitude on social media, he shared his appreciation for the support and affection received from the public during this personal milestone.
Youri Tielemans, Belgium’s captain, supported Doku’s decision, underscoring the significance of being present for such a momentous occasion. Tielemans, a father of three, described the moment as unforgettable and natural for any parent.
I think having a child is the most beautiful thing in the world that you can have, and being there, it’s more than normal as a dad, as a mom, obviously. But yeah, being there as a dad, for myself, I have three and it’s memories you can’t take back. So, yeah, very happy for him.
Despite missing Belgium’s match against Iran due to illness, Doku intends to return in time for the crucial game against New Zealand. Belgium’s performance will determine if they progress to the knockout round, following the draws in their previous games.
