Author and scholar Gad Saad has issued a stark warning about the potential collapse of Western civilization due to misplaced empathy. In his book Suicidal Empathy: Dying to Be Kind, Saad argues that the West risks jeopardizing its values by favoring ideological signaling over truth and rationality.
Saad emphasizes that moderation in empathy is essential, noting that an excessive amount can lead to problematic consequences. He illustrates this by referring to the aftermath of the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Israel, highlighting how sympathy shifted from Jewish victims to critiques of Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
“All good things in moderation,” Saad reminded readers during his interview with Fox News Digital.
Saad’s concerns extend to broader cultural debates, such as the confusion around gender definitions seen in the political arena. He cites Justice Katanji Brown Jackson’s 2022 confirmation hearing as an example of this confusion, where she avoided defining what constitutes a woman. Saad mocked this reluctance, stating that everyday common sense should prevail in recognizing basic truths.
The scholar also discusses the rise of antisemitism, sharing his personal experiences from his past in Lebanon and his subsequent life in Canada. He points out that historically, normalized hatred, such as antisemitism, signals moral decay within a society.
Highlighting difficulties for Jewish academics, Saad recounted the challenges he faced at Concordia University, leading to his decision to take a leave of absence. With antisemitism on the rise, he describes the situation as serious, urging everyone to heed warning signs.
Despite cultural shifts, Saad underscores the limitations of political changes; he suggests that true cultural evolution requires time. He acknowledges the courageous effort by some professors in opposing dominant ideologies but notes many are hesitant to speak publicly, often fearing backlash.
Rachel Wolf, Fox News Digital, brings to light Saad’s viewpoints, shedding light on the complexities faced when addressing contentious issues within academia and society.
