A recent national survey highlights how economic pressures affect Gen Z’s dating and sexual activities. This Gen Z Sex Survey, conducted in 2026 by Playboy, the Kinsey Institute, and Julie, indicates that financial concerns are a significant barrier to romantic relationships.
Survey Findings
The survey included 2,373 adults and revealed key insights:
- 43% said financial worries make dating or maintaining relationships difficult.
- 39% cited dating costs as limiting their romantic opportunities.
- 80% reported moderate to very high sexual desire, yet 29% hadn’t had sex in three months, and one in five reported never having had sex.
- 32% felt their sex life was fulfilling and consistent.
Sandra Hatton, CEO of When We First, noted financial issues extend beyond dining expenses. Living with family, rent worries, student debt, and basic expenses reduce privacy and emotional capacity for dating.
Economic Impact
Economic realities like housing costs, student debt, and inflation affect Gen Z’s romantic lives more than previously thought. Matthew Firth, founder of NexSpark, explained that the cost and time investment of dating apps often deter Gen Z from seeking romance, leading some to opt-out of dating entirely.
Current Trends
Contrary to declining activity headlines, intimate acts like kissing remain frequent. Nearly half of respondents reported daily kissing, increasing to 72% among those in relationships. However, money remains a major obstacle:
- 43% reported financial concerns impacting dating or relationships.
- Men (48%) reported more financial barriers than women (38%).
- 54% live with parents, and 64% haven’t had sex in the last three months, highlighting privacy issues.
Brie Temple, COO of Tawkify, emphasized the lack of privacy in home living arrangements affecting intimacy. Privacy and spontaneity are crucial for meaningful connections.
Future Implications
If financial pressures lessen, barriers to dating might reduce. However, digital habits, dating fatigue, and evolving relationship attitudes might still impact Gen Z’s romantic lives. Dating coaches suggest low-cost date ideas:
Rae Weiss, a Gen Z dating coach, suggested activities like coffee runs, gaming with takeout, or trivia with friends as alternative date ideas. Expectations for first dates need adjusting to the economic realities young adults face.
