Fox News has revised its assessment of 15 House races, reducing Republican prospects as Democrats aim to broaden the battleground and capture more conservative seats in the upcoming elections. This adjustment arrives amidst President Donald Trump’s declining approval ratings as Election Day approaches. Democrats need only a few seat gains to achieve a majority, with Republicans currently holding 218 seats to Democrats’ 214.
The latest update from Fox News Power Rankings categorizes five new races as toss-ups, shifts six races to Lean Republican, three to Lean Democratic, and one to Likely Democratic. These changes serve as a warning sign for Republicans with only six weeks remaining until the midterms.
Key Races in Focus
The toss-up category now includes two Florida districts previously held by Democrats, made more conservative through redistricting: Florida’s 14th and 22nd Districts. Also included are Iowa’s 2nd District, Maine’s 2nd District, and Michigan’s 4th District.
Overall, Democrats are favored in 215 races while Republicans lead in 201. There are 19 toss-up seats with no clear leader.
Comparisons with Other Forecasts
Other forecasters, like the Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball, have similar predictions but show some differences. They identify more races as toss-ups than Fox News. As of Tuesday, both had four races classified as toss-ups. Sabato’s Crystal Ball recently shifted three races in favor of Democrats, moving Florida’s 27th District from Likely Republican to Leans Republican, Iowa’s 1st District from Toss-up to Leans Democratic, and Texas’ 9th District from Safe Republican to Likely Republican.
“This year, the president’s credibility on the economy is shot, and has been shot for the bulk of his term,” said Managing Editor Kyle Kondik.
Poll Trends & Predictions
Recent polls reveal an improvement in Democrats’ standing as Election Day nears. Democrats have shown consistent leads in generic ballot polls, with some indicating potential for a blue ripple rather than a wave. A YouGov and The Economist poll shows Democrats ahead by 14 points among likely voters.
In other surveys, Democrats lead by 8 points in polls conducted by Ipsos and Reuters, and Quantus Insights. Pollster Nate Silver noted worsening conditions for Republicans, remarking on potential impacts of gas prices and AI anxieties.
Market Predictions
Prediction markets now favor Democrats to gain control of the House. As of Tuesday, on platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket, Democrats had a high likelihood of winning the House, increasing from earlier in the year.
These markets allow traders to buy and sell contracts tied to political outcomes, providing real-time sentiment but not always predicting results accurately.
Historical Context
Recent House elections have been competitive. In 2018, Democrats gained significantly during midterm elections. They anticipate similar outcomes this year, contingent on Trump’s approval rating and pivotal toss-up races.
- 2016: Republicans held a 241-194 majority.
- 2018: Democrats gained with a 235-199 majority.
- 2020: Democrats had a slim 222-213 majority.
- 2022 and 2024: Republicans regained a narrow majority.
Looking Ahead
As November 3 approaches, polling developments and economic issues will be crucial. Trump’s approval rating may also play an important role in this year’s elections.
