Georgia Governor Race: Keisha Lance Bottoms and Rick Jackson in Tight Contest
The race for governor in Georgia between Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms and Republican Rick Jackson is highly competitive according to recent polls. Although Bottoms holds a slight lead, the margin of error makes the race too close to call. Democrats aim to gain control of the governor’s office for the first time in over 20 years, following Republican Governor Brian Kemp’s term limit.
Bottoms’ victory would mark the return of a Democrat to the Georgia governorship since Roy Barnes’ win in 1998. The challenge for Bottoms lies in securing not only Democratic votes but also support from independents and moderate Republicans. The difficulty Democrats face consistently capturing this support has been evident in past gubernatorial races.
Georgia’s contest is among 36 gubernatorial races occurring nationwide in 2026, which includes significant open-seat races in Michigan, Alaska, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nevada. Bottoms, the former mayor of Atlanta, won her party’s primary with over 56% of votes in May. Jackson, backed by former President Donald Trump, became the Republican nominee by defeating Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones with about 53% in a runoff.
Georgia has emerged as a battleground state, with Democrats achieving success in recent federal elections, such as Senate wins by Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. Despite these federal victories, Republicans have maintained the governor’s office, with Kemp comfortably defeating Democrat Stacey Abrams in 2022 by 7.5 percentage points.
What Polls Show
Recent surveys indicate a close race for governor. A Quantus Insights poll shows Bottoms with 46.4% support compared to Jackson’s 44.9%, with a margin of error of ±3.6%. Another poll by AARP’s Georgia Voter Survey displays Bottoms at 48% to Jackson’s 46%, with a margin of error of ±3%.
Earlier surveys exhibited a more significant lead for Bottoms. A State Navigate poll showed Bottoms leading Jackson by 51% to 44% when considering leaners. However, a Wick Research poll found the race tied, with Jackson slightly ahead within the margin of error.
Prediction markets suggest a favorable lead for Bottoms. Confidence in her victory is reflected in prediction platforms, showing her odds at 57% to Jackson’s 43% on Kalshi, and 59% to 42% on Polymarket.
Georgia’s Shift From Red to Purple State
Atlanta’s growth and demographic changes have shifted Georgia from a Republican stronghold to a battleground state. Atlanta suburbs, trending Democratic, contributed to this shift. Democrats hope to ride these trends in the 2026 elections.
Although Trump narrowly carried Georgia in the 2024 election, Democrats have executed strong performances in the state. The tightening of election results in the traditionally Republican areas worries some Republicans, as seen in the special election to replace Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Georgia voters will also decide a significant Senate race in November, with Democrat Senator Jon Ossoff facing Republican Mike Collins. Ossoff is a leading fundraiser with $42 million in cash, defending a key Democratic seat as the party seeks to regain Senate control.
The Georgia governor’s race is pivotal as both parties vie for control. High voter turnout may influence not only the governor’s outcome but also the Senate race’s implications for national politics.
