A Georgia teacher and father tragically lost his life while saving a young girl caught in a rip current off Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Derrick Moore, 47, entered the ocean near 10th Avenue South to rescue the girl around 7:53 p.m. on a Friday evening, according to the Myrtle Beach Police Department.
After bringing the girl to safety, the current pulled Moore underwater, leading to his disappearance. The event occurred after lifeguard services had ended for the day. Authorities found Moore’s body washed ashore the following Saturday morning.
Moore’s daughter expressed heartbreak over her father’s passing, stating he did not know the girl he saved. “We loved him and are truly heartbroken that he’s gone,” she said. Moore leaves behind four children, according to a GoFundMe page created in his memory.
As news of Moore’s heroics spread, tributes came from friends, former teammates, and family members. They remembered him as a devoted father, gifted athlete, and selfless individual whose final act epitomized his way of life.
The DeKalb County School District confirmed that Moore worked as a teacher at Rockbridge Elementary School in Georgia, where students affectionately called him “Coach.” He previously taught at Jolly Elementary School. The district expressed deep sadness over his passing, highlighting the significant impact he had on students, families, colleagues, and the community.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp paid tribute to Moore, acknowledging him as a father, teacher, and coach. He urged prayers for Moore’s family and the DeKalb County community during this difficult time.
Moore’s athletic achievements were notable during his college years at Samford University. The university issued a statement mourning the loss of their alumnus, honoring him as a “beloved teacher” and “true hero,” and requesting the Samford community to keep his family in their thoughts.
Family members described Moore’s final act as a testament to his character. He entered the water to save the life of a stranger, an act they said exemplified his selflessness and legacy. “You died a HERO,” one family member remarked, commemorating his sacrifice.
