Gianni Infantino Faces Challenges Over FIFA Leadership
Gianni Infantino will meet with top FIFA officials in Morocco on Wednesday. The meeting aims to address his leadership issues following the failed attempt to sell World Cup commercial rights. Infantino has faced criticism after proposing a new commercial rights body to FIFA’s 211 member associations last week.
The plan involved selling 20% of the body to private investors to raise $4.2 billion. Critics highlighted the involvement of a company with family ties to President Donald Trump as a major flaw. European confederation UEFA, a notable critic, accused Infantino of jeopardizing the essence of the sport and expressed distrust in his leadership.
This situation impacts Infantino’s attempt for a fourth term at the FIFA Congress in Morocco in March. Previously a surety, his reelection is now uncertain. Several European federations have withdrawn support, and some FIFA colleagues express dissatisfaction.
FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom criticized the abandoned project in an internal memo. His memo, revealed by two sources to Reuters, did not mention Infantino directly. FIFA Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour shared similar sentiments, stating staff felt deceived by the plan.
Infantino’s senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned in protest, while Arsene Wenger distanced himself, saying he was not involved and supported the project’s withdrawal.
Surviving Until the Election
Infantino has been in Morocco, co-host for the 2030 World Cup, which supports him. Wednesday’s meeting will focus on sustaining his position until the election. An Extraordinary Congress can be convened with a request from 43 or more FIFA member associations.
A report by the Times of London indicated that UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation aim to remove Infantino. They might paralyze FIFA or establish separate competitions. Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia, however, support Infantino against the AFC’s position.
Despite challenges, Infantino enjoys significant backing from associations dependent on FIFA’s support. The proposed plan included a promised dividend of $20 million to $40 million for national bodies supporting it.
African Support Amid Crisis
African football leaders express support for Infantino. The continent’s 54 members might prove crucial, though the African confederation (CAF) remains neutral. Oceania’s executive committee will discuss their stance soon. New Zealand Football boss Andrew Pragnell emphasized alignment with their confederation.
According to FIFA rules, every country’s vote counts equally, giving smaller nations influence. Infantino has no clear opponent for the March election, which could extend his presidency.
Prince Ali bin Hussein of Jordan, who previously ran for FIFA’s presidency, criticized FIFA on social media, accusing the organization of “blackmail” for offering help in exchange for support for Infantino.
In response to these issues, Reuters has contacted FIFA for comments on the allegations.
