Two giant pandas from China have landed in the U.S., marking a milestone due to a bilateral agreement between the United States and China. Zoo Atlanta confirmed the arrival of these pandas on Sunday.
Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, the two giant pandas, touched down at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Sunday morning. They traveled on a specially designated Boeing 777 aircraft, noted as the ‘FedEx Panda Express.’
Raymond B. King, president and CEO of Zoo Atlanta, expressed his joy about this occasion, stating that the event is historically significant for the city of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and beyond.
Zoo Atlanta issued a statement quoting King’s remarks: “We are elated to welcome Ping Ping and Fu Shuang and could not be more excited about sharing that joy with our members, guests, city and community in the coming weeks.”
Despite the excitement, those eager to see Ping Ping and Fu Shuang will need to be patient. The pandas will spend about a month in quarantine within a biosecure section of the zoo’s newly constructed giant panda habitat. The specific date when they will be available for public viewing has yet to be announced.
The public announcement coincided with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington for a summit with President Trump. During this meeting, they disclosed that the pandas would be loaned to Atlanta.
Reports from Xinhua News Agency showed vehicles transporting Ping Ping and Fu Shuang departing from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on September 26, 2026.
Zoo Atlanta has been involved with China’s panda program for over two decades. The zoo bid farewell to its previous pandas in 2024, leaving it temporarily without these beloved creatures. The new arrangement regarding Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, announced in April, restores this cherished element of the zoo’s animal collection. These pandas will be staying at the zoo for a decade.
Both pandas, born in 2020, were raised at Chengdu Research Base. According to Xinhua News Agency, Ping Ping, the male panda, is distinguished by prominent black circles around his eyes. Fu Shuang, the female, is noted for her slightly protruding forehead.
The sharing of giant pandas forms part of China’s diplomatic strategy, where these animals symbolize friendship and goodwill when countries share amicable relations. Xi Jinping has highlighted this as representative of the bond between the Chinese and American peoples.
Presently, two additional American zoos, the National Zoo and the San Diego Zoo, also house pandas from China, thanks to similar agreements made in 2024.
