The notorious case of the Gilgo Beach serial killings reaches a significant point on Wednesday. Rex Heuermann, the former Manhattan architect who led a double life as a serial killer, is set to be sentenced. His admissions to eight murders bring closure to a case that has troubled Long Island for almost two decades.
The sentencing takes place in Riverhead, New York, around 9:30 a.m. Heuermann faces multiple life terms. In court, both Heuermann and the victims’ families will have a chance to speak.
Earlier this year, Heuermann pleaded guilty to charges for seven murders. He admitted causing the death of an eighth victim, Karen Vergata. As part of a plea agreement, authorities did not charge him with Vergata’s murder.
The victims included Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Costello, Sandra Costilla, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, Karen Vergata, and Megan Waterman. The Suffolk County Police Department has documented these cases.
Heuermann resided in Massapequa Park, located about an hour east of Manhattan. His arrest in 2023 relied on substantial evidence, including DNA from a pizza crust in Manhattan. This arrest reignited the investigation, providing hope to the victims’ grieving families.
He faced charges for the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Megan Waterman, 22, and Amber Costello, 27. These women disappeared in 2009 and 2010, and as sex workers. Their bodies were discovered at Gilgo Beach in 2010, bound in burlap. In 2024, charges included the killing of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25. He later faced accusations for the deaths of Jessica Taylor, 20, in 2003, Sandra Costilla, 28, whose remains emerged in 1993, and Valerie Mack, 24, missing since 2000.
These serial killings instilled fear in Long Island residents. The area, home to both middle-class and affluent families, became a focal point of concern. The community includes many professionals commuting to New York City.
