International outrage is mounting against Israel over accusations of mistreatment and abuse of international activists detained on a flotilla. This flotilla was attempting to breach Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza. The controversy involves several countries, including France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Greece, Spain, Ireland, and the Netherlands, whose nationals were allegedly abused. These claims emerged after Israeli forces detained participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters in the past month.
Flotilla organizers report that out of around 420 people aboard, 67 were hospitalized due to injuries sustained during their detention, with 12 requiring extensive medical care. There are allegations that Israeli forces used extreme measures such as firing rubber bullets at close range, using tasers, and throwing stun grenades. Organizers also accuse the forces of forcing stress positions, removing hijabs, and conducting humiliating searches, including sexual abuse claims.
The physical toll on detainees was severe, with reports of broken bones and other serious injuries. Arno Meys, a captain, suffered a punctured lung, rendering him unable to fly for a month. Another participant experienced a broken foot and potential internal bleeding, while a third had a broken leg. French authorities, among others, express serious concerns about these actions, which might constitute criminal offenses. Consequently, France has requested its public prosecutor to investigate.
The Israeli Defense Forces reject the allegations, emphasizing that their operations comply with protocols protecting naval security. They assert that procedures mandate dignified treatment of detained individuals. The Israeli Prison Service also denies the claims of abuse, including specific allegations of sexual abuse.
After the incident, all international detainees were released. Activist Saif Abukeshek and others landed safely at El Prat Airport in Spain. The incident attracted further criticism when Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir released a video that seemed to show him taunting restrained activists. This act was condemned by various governments, including those of Israel’s allies.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Spanish Foreign Minister JosĂ© Manuel Albares criticized the treatment, highlighting the violation of human dignity and summoning the Israeli charge d’affaires. Even within Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Ben-Gvir’s conduct as inconsistent with the country’s values. Ben-Gvir declined to comment on the criticism.
Legal experts, including Adil Haque, emphasize the significance of the video as a wake-up call. The incident prompted discussions about broader abuses, urging attention to the mistreatment of Palestinians by Israeli military and prison authorities. The United Nations and human rights groups continue to probe such allegations.
Recently, the U.N. has added Israel and Russia to a blacklist concerning sexual violence in conflict, based on verified reports. The report documented abuses, including rape and physical violence, affecting Palestinians from 2023 to 2025.
The issue of detainee abuse continues to garner international scrutiny, urging Israel to investigate and prosecute the alleged crimes effectively. As appeals escalate, international law experts stress the necessity for Israel to address these grave allegations.
