John Rzeznik, the frontman of the Goo Goo Dolls, emphasized the importance of separating politics from music during a conversation with Rick Beato on ‘Everything Music.’ He stated that fans from a variety of political views attend concerts for the shared enjoyment of live music. Rzeznik expressed the belief that divisive topics like politics and religion are not what bring audiences together at concerts.
Rzeznik explained, ‘I have fans and friends from every background and political belief, and we share a common goal – to see a show. I avoid lecturing audiences on these matters.’ His stance is that music should unite people, even in times of division.
Commenting on this perspective, entertainment analyst Christian Toto noted that artists risk alienating their audiences if they use concerts as platforms for political statements. Toto observed that while artist political commentary is prevalent, it can often be perceived as one-sided and poorly reasoned. He suggested that fans may feel disconnected when political discussions dominate live performances.
Toto also highlighted the high cost of concert tickets as a factor in audience frustration. He remarked, ‘With ticket prices reaching exorbitant levels in 2026, attendees expect entertainment rather than political lectures during a concert.’
Rzeznik’s approach aligns with Mick Jagger’s comments from earlier this year. Jagger also emphasized the role of musicians in helping audiences escape their concerns rather than acting as political commentators.
Some musicians have faced criticism for integrating politics into their shows. For instance, Bruce Springsteen and Chris Robinson encountered negative reactions after political comments during performances in June.
Rzeznik expressed his intention for Goo Goo Dolls concerts, stating, ‘I aim to play songs that resonate with the audience, leaving everyone feeling happier and better.’ This philosophy reflects Rzeznik’s commitment to keeping music as a source of enjoyment and unity.
The Goo Goo Dolls recently experienced renewed attention with their 1998 hit ‘Iris.’ A reimagined version of the song, featuring Steve Aoki, was released in March. The band also toured with Neon Trees over the summer. An anniversary edition of their album ‘Dizzy Up the Girl,’ which includes ‘Iris,’ is set for release on October 2.
