Gov. JB Pritzker Shares His Weight Loss Journey and Health Transformation
Gov. Pritzker’s Diabetes Diagnosis and Transformative Journey
Gov. JB Pritzker publicly revealed that he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes two years ago. Since then, he has lost 80 pounds with the aid of a GLP-1 drug. The 61-year-old Democrat shared his weight-loss experience in an essay on Substack and in select interviews. Pritzker’s announcement coincides with his campaign for a third term as Illinois governor and possible aspirations for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
Health and Lifestyle Changes
Pritzker mentioned that a routine blood test led to his diabetes diagnosis. His doctor initially cautioned that he would rely on insulin for life. The governor was determined to change course, particularly in light of his father’s early death from a heart attack at 39. Alongside insulin, Pritzker’s doctor prescribed a GLP-1 drug, known to manage weight, lower blood sugar, and curb appetite.
Describing his journey, Pritzker shared, “First, the food noise—which used to make me look at my watch and wish the next mealtime would come faster—has gone away. I also exercise daily. Initially, it felt like drudgery, but it has become an enjoyable break from the daily grind.” He now starts his day with a four-mile walk and enjoys activities like hikes, pickleball, tennis, and jogging with his children.
Navigating Public Scrutiny
Pritzker faced frequent questions about his weight loss for more than a year. Until recently, he avoided direct answers regarding the use of GLP-1 or any weight-loss drug. During an interview on NBC-5, he remarked, “I’m not going to answer that question partly because I think there are a lot of people who are on those GLP-1s, and it’s kind of none of anybody’s business.”
Despite taunts from former President Donald Trump about his weight, Pritzker integrated humor into his campaign, referring to his “Think Big” motto. He humorously acknowledged his weight loss at a Washington event, quipping, “I’m JB Pritzker, governor of the great state of Illinois, and if you’re seeing me in person for the very first time, yes, I’m the gov who put ‘gov’ in Wegovy.”
Policy Impact
Pritzker hopes his experience will influence policy changes. In 2024, he authorized the state employee health insurance plan to cover GLP-1s. He recalled a veteran state employee who told him the policy helped her lose 100 pounds. Her story inspired Pritzker to share his own, encouraging others to consult their doctors about GLP-1s.
Throughout his tenure, Pritzker has remained private about his health. His office disclosed minor health issues, like a hairline fracture recovery in 2019 and a COVID-19 diagnosis in 2022.
Inspiration for Others
Pritzker aspires for his journey to inspire those grappling with obesity, diabetes, or other health issues. Reflecting on his father’s life, he pondered whether GLP-1s could have extended his father’s life. “If you have struggled with type 2 diabetes or being overweight, I hope this can be the push you need to talk to your doctor again,” Pritzker said. “Evaluate your options. See if a GLP-1 can help you live a longer life with those you love.”
