London — A new book released on Tuesday by Charles Spencer, brother of the late Princess Diana, has sparked global headlines with its critical allegations against Diana’s ex-husband, now King Charles III. The publication has revived long-standing tensions within Britain’s royal family.
In his book, titled Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Charles Spencer claims he disputed palace plans for Prince William and Prince Harry to walk behind their mother’s coffin during her funeral procession in 1997. He argues Diana would not have wanted her sons, then teenagers, to endure such an experience.
Spencer recalls a heated exchange where Charles reportedly reacted aggressively, saying, “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough.” Spencer further accuses Charles of displaying “contempt” for Diana and suggests he seemed “elated” following her tragic death.
After excerpts were made public last week, Buckingham Palace issued a rare and strong response. “His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss,” the statement read.
Despite the royal reaction, Spencer maintains his allegations, affirming to the BBC that he speaks the truth. He questioned the royal response, pondering whether Charles might be “furious” or “embarrassed.”
Historical Tensions Resurface
Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 at St. Paul’s Cathedral when he was 32 and she was 20. Their union ended in divorce in 1996. Charles later married Camilla Parker Bowles, now Queen Camilla. Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, has had ongoing disputes with the royals over their handling of his sister. These tensions were explored in the film The Queen and the Netflix series The Crown.
At Diana’s funeral, Spencer delivered a powerful eulogy, committing to continue her “imaginative and loving” legacy for her sons, interpreted by many as criticising the royal family.
There was widespread belief at the time that Queen Elizabeth II and the royals were slow to respond to the overwhelming public grief after Diana’s death.
Spencer’s Observations on Harry and Media Treatment
Spencer criticizes the perceived lack of care for young Prince Harry. After the funeral, he described Harry as “tiny, and slight, and bereft,” noting his need for Diana’s comforting presence, which was permanently lost to him.
Reflecting on the relationship between the press and Harry, along with his wife Meghan, Spencer sees parallels with Diana’s treatment. “(Diana) was really brought low by all that criticism. I suppose it’s a pity when I see echoes of that now,” he stated.
Spencer explains his intention in writing the book to document his thoughts and memories of Diana, aiming to address inaccuracies presented by others.
Penguin Press has announced the global release of the book, with translations in 12 languages.
