On June 12, 2026, the U.S. Commerce Department issued a directive affecting Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company. The order mandated Anthropic to restrict access to its two most advanced large language models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. This decision effectively blocked all foreign nationals from using these models.
The immediate outcome was the deactivation of both models within hours of the directive. As a result, they became inaccessible to users worldwide.
This move by the government might suggest an intention to reserve the most advanced AI technologies for domestic use. By limiting access to foreign nationals, the U.S. could be attempting to maintain a technological edge or ensure that these AI capabilities remain under control.
