Maryland Governor Wes Moore, a Democrat, expressed support for former President Donald Trump’s new initiative involving child investment accounts during an interview on Tuesday. He acknowledged that this policy might help combat child poverty and the racial wealth gap, despite criticizing other areas of Trump’s agenda.
Moore commended the administration for implementing a policy paralleling the concept of ‘baby bonds’, which he discussed on ‘The Clay Cane Show’ podcast. He noted that neither past Democratic nor Republican presidents managed to realize such a program.
‘I will give this administration credit for this, is that we’ve had Democratic presidents and Republican presidents who have not been able to get this done, and it actually got done,’ Moore said.
He likened the child investment accounts to baby bonds, a long-time proposal from Democrats and progressives aiming to aid children’s financial growth.
‘I’m so with you because, honestly, it’s a good idea,’ Moore remarked. ‘And you know what it is, frankly? It’s essentially the same thing that we’ve been advocating for for a decade, which is like baby bonds.’
Moore explained that these accounts could provide children with a financial asset that appreciates over time, offering them economic mobility.
Though supportive of the savings accounts, Moore opposed other parts of the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’, or H.R. 1, which was passed last year. He objected to elements such as tax cuts for billionaires and benefits for private plane owners, suggesting these measures could impede progress on reducing the racial wealth gap.
‘Even though these savings accounts are good things for kids, if you look at the other policies that came in under H.R. 1, we have moved the ball significantly backwards in an attempt to be able to address the racial wealth gap,’ Moore said.
Regarding concerns that the proposal might resemble socialism, Moore asserted that strengthening capitalism for broader participation was the true goal.
‘It’s just saying how can you have a capitalistic system that works for everybody,’ Moore said. ‘I believe that capitalism has been a remarkable engine, and I believe that if the goal that I have, I want to create pathways to work, wages, wealth … I believe that capitalism is the best vehicle to help us to be able to do that, but not when it’s corrupted.’
Moore added that these accounts could allow children to benefit from stock market growth.
‘The savings account is a way for young people, for children, for babies, to be able to benefit from the rise in the stock market,’ he said.
He expressed his willingness to collaborate with Trump on initiatives beneficial to Maryland but insisted on opposing policies he believes would harm the state.
‘I will work with anyone, but I will bow to no one,’ he declared.
The IRS announced that Trump Accounts are available for minors under 18 with valid Social Security numbers, featuring a $1,000 pilot contribution for U.S. citizens born from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2028. Contributions can start on July 4, 2026, with a maximum annual limit of $5,000, invested in broad stock-market index funds and generally restricted until the child turns 18.
