Graham Platner Battles Controversies in Maine Senate Race
BAR HARBOR, Maine – Democratic candidate Graham Platner, running for the U.S. Senate in Maine, acknowledged the challenges faced during his campaign as controversies arise. Platner described the issues as “politically motivated” while addressing supporters in his home state, emphasizing the support he has received during these times.
Platner aims to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins, a moderate in the ongoing midterm elections. His campaign faces scrutiny over inflammatory online comments, a covered-up tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, and allegations from ex-girlfriends citing fantasies of rape, heavy drinking, and violent behavior.
The veteran and oyster farmer has spoken about his personal battles with PTSD, expressing gratitude for the support from Maine residents as he navigates the backlash from his past actions.
“When hurtful things I said on the internet a decade ago came out into the public… Maine had my back,” Platner expressed to his supporters at a rally.
Despite these challenges, Platner is pushing an economically populist agenda endorsed by progressive figures such as Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Ro Khanna. He proposes taxing billionaires and supporting the working class, aiming to counter corporate influences.

Platner addressed the backlash from his Reddit posts and explained the tattoo incident, noting it was inked during social drinking among Marines. Platner asserts the tattoo was covered after realizing its resemblance to controversial symbols.
At Friday’s rally, Congressman Khanna shared his concerns about misogyny and toxic relationships in Platner’s history, emphasizing Platner’s personal growth post-military service. Khanna advocates for redemption and accountability, urging support for Platner’s economic policies.
Senator Susan Collins, who has reached a milestone of 10,000 consecutive Senate votes, highlighted the seriousness of the allegations facing Platner. Collins questioned Platner’s suitability amidst the extensive scrutiny.
