Democratic candidate Graham Platner faces serious allegations that may impact his run in the Maine Senate race. Jenny Racicot, a Maine resident, accused Platner of sexually assaulting her in 2021. Platner denies the claim, calling it ‘troubling, serious, and false’ in a video statement on social media.
Platner, while rejecting the accusation, acknowledged the potential political consequences. He stated, ‘Regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting, but mindful of the political reality it will inflict, we are taking the time to reflect on the best path forward for the state that I love, the people that I love, the movement I belong to, and the goal of defeating Susan Collins.’
Political Implications
The controversy arises as Democrats aim to unseat GOP Senator Susan Collins in Maine. Maine, where Donald Trump lost by 7 points in 2024, might see a Democratic win if they can secure the electorate’s confidence. Ronald Schmidt, a political science professor from the University of Southern Maine, highlighted the challenge, stating beating Collins would always be difficult and that these allegations further complicate the effort. However, Schmidt also emphasized that Collins is not ‘untouchable’.
Maine’s Election Law
Maine law allows a political party to replace its nominee if withdrawn by July 13. Should Platner step down, Democrats have until July 27 to select a new candidate through an internal process. Currently, Platner has not confirmed if he will leave the race.
Potential Candidates
Several Democrats might replace Platner in the race. Troy Jackson, the former Maine Senate president, has been suggested as a candidate capable of rallying the progressive base. Though unclear if he’s interested, a poll indicated Jackson leading Collins by 5 points.
Other possible replacements include Nirav Shah, former CDC director during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Shenna Bellows, Maine’s secretary of state, though Bellows previously lost to Collins by a large margin. Jared Golden, representative for Maine’s Second District, and Sara Gideon, who ran against Collins in 2020, are also mentioned as options.
Governor Janet Mills could be another choice, but she has suspended her Senate campaign due to funding issues and polling less favorably against Collins.
Platner’s Scandal History
Platner’s candidacy has been marred by previous scandals. Allegations by ex-partner Lyndsey Fifield and reports of infidelity have raised concerns. Platner has responded by denying these accusations, labeling them as politically motivated.
Controversy also erupted over Platner’s tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol and racially charged comments on Reddit. Despite these incidents, three of his former girlfriends have expressed support for his campaign.
Impact on the Senate Race
Dan Shea from Colby College expressed concerns over Platner’s chances if he remains in the race. The allegations and documentation provided by Racicot could severely damage his campaign. Additionally, data indicates increased chances for Democrats to flip the Senate seat if Platner is replaced, with traders on platforms like Polymarket reacting to the possibility of a new nominee.
Mark Brewer from the University of Maine noted that the scandal could be difficult to overcome, giving Collins an advantage unless Democrats find a stronger candidate.
