Graham Platner’s Campaign Under Scrutiny Due to Personal Revelations
Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the Senate in Maine, faced significant campaign challenges stemming from personal issues. Over the summer, as his campaign started gaining momentum, revelations surfaced that threatened to derail his efforts.
Amy Gertner, Platner’s wife, informed a senior aide of the campaign that Platner had engaged in inappropriate exchanges with several women. This disclosure posed a substantial risk to his candidacy, particularly as he sought to unseat Senator Susan Collins, a Republican. Female voters are a substantial portion of Maine’s electorate, making these revelations especially sensitive.
Campaign officials, both current and past, verified these exchanges. Accounts from these officials varied in some details. Gertner, who wed Platner in November 2023, mentioned the couple’s current involvement in marriage counseling to address these issues.
Genevieve McDonald, formerly the political director for the Platner campaign, recalled Gertner’s concerns prior to a major Labor Day rally featuring Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Gertner expressed worry that her husband’s conduct, involving as many as a dozen women, might become a political liability.
