Graham Platner recently claimed a victory in the Democratic primary for the Senate. Despite intense scrutiny over his history, his win points to an upcoming challenging race against Senator Susan Collins, a Republican incumbent.
The primary result, predicted after Governor Janet Mills halted her campaign in April, places Mr. Platner in a face-off with Senator Collins. Ms. Collins has been a tough opponent for Democrats to unseat in the past. During his victory speech, Mr. Platner criticized Ms. Collins and highlighted his goals to introduce progressive reforms. These include endorsing abortion rights and establishing a single-payer health system known as Medicare for all.
He addressed past news reports about his personal history, claiming they were irrelevant to the coming election. “In trying so hard to understand me, they failed to understand that this is not about me at all,” Mr. Platner stated. “This is a movement about us, about the far too many working far too hard and struggling far too much.”
The race between Collins and Platner is projected to be intensely contested and costly. Maine holds the only Republican Senate seat up for election this year in a state where President Trump was defeated in 2024. For Democrats to secure a Senate majority, they need to convert at least four Republican-held seats in November.
Mr. Platner, who is 41, led significantly against the other Democratic contenders. Governor Janet Mills has not endorsed him, and she recently reminded voters of her presence on the ballot, despite suspending her campaign. Another candidate, David Costello, a former Maryland state official, lacked significant donor support and recognition. With 37 percent of votes tabulated on Tuesday night, Mr. Platner was ahead of Ms. Mills by 72 percent to 19 percent, with Mr. Costello garnering 8 percent of the vote.
