Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the Grand Canyon after a flash flood left one person deceased and 15 hikers unaccounted for. National Park Service teams have been actively evacuating individuals by helicopter, focusing on areas such as the Kaibab Trail and the vicinity of the Colorado River.
Victims identified from this tragic event are John Giusti, a 46-year-old chiropractor, and Brent Rosenkranz, a 42-year-old martial artist. Both men, with connections to Granbury, Texas, were on a trip with Timothy Smith, who remains missing. The families of the three men shared that they intended to enjoy several days of hiking, camping, fishing, and exploration.
The incident occurred on Saturday, August 29, due to flash floods along Bright Angel Creek, which leads to the Colorado River near Phantom Ranch. This area is known for its historic accommodations and is a popular spot for river rafters and hikers.
During the ordeal, search operations deployed night vision and advanced equipment to assist in rescues. By late Saturday, 45 individuals were rescued, and 37 more were evacuated by Sunday.
Authorities used the park’s permit system and vehicle license plates to identify missing persons. Only one person is noted as still missing, basing on current intelligence.
Rain preceding the deluge led hiker Daniel Evans to expect a rest at Bright Angel Campground; however, the conditions worsened unexpectedly, causing rangers to advise evacuation. “I kept watching upstream, fearing a wall of water,” Evans reported.
Janet Giusti, wife of John Giusti, shared on a fundraising page that her husband was fulfilling a lifelong dream of exploring the Grand Canyon. She remembered him as a vibrant individual and a devoted father.
Before the flooding, Rosenkranz had posted about his exhilaration for the upcoming hiking challenge. Despite the risks posed by nature, the trip was viewed as a significant adventure.
This disaster struck while the three men were on what should have been a memorable outdoor quest. The families continue to hold onto hope as search efforts persist.
