Grant Cancellations Based on Political Affiliation: Court Filing Reveals
Federal green grants canceled last year were influenced by the political leanings of states, according to a recent court filing from the Trump administration. The Department of Energy (DOE) attorney, Jeff Novak, disclosed that a list of 624 grants was initially considered for potential termination.
From this list, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) decided to cancel 284 grants. Notably, these grants were linked to states that supported then-Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election and had two Democratic-caucusing senators. Only one grant was an exception.
Novak confirmed that the remaining 340 grants did not face cancellation. He acknowledged that the grants chosen for the October notification were selected based on political identity, without considering programmatic, statutory, cost-reduction, or performance-based factors.
Despite the political nature of OMB’s selections, Novak emphasized that the initial DOE proposal of 624 cancellations did not account for the political identity of the recipient states.
