A wildfire in the Sierra Nevada foothills has spread rapidly, posing a threat to the city of Reno, Nevada. Authorities have called for the evacuation of over 90,000 residents as the fire encroaches on neighborhoods.
The fire, which began Saturday, has already destroyed some homes. Shifting winds remain a concern as they could drive the flames into densely populated areas on the outskirts of Nevada’s second-largest city. Schools in the county shut down on Monday to facilitate evacuations and enable emergency vehicle access.
Efforts are underway to manage the Hawk Fire, named for its proximity to the area. Firefighters focus on extinguishing hotspots and preventing the fire from crossing a major highway into populated regions.
The blaze has consumed over 23 square miles (60 square kilometers) around neighborhoods near the California state line, with zero containment reported. Six people have been injured, including three firefighters and three civilians. The fire’s origin is attributed to human activity, though the specifics remain unclear.
Social media posts highlight the devastation, with images of charred homes and vehicles. Residents were caught off guard by the fire’s swift escalation.
Ruby Delatorre, a local resident, recounted her shock upon returning home from a concert to find herself in the evacuation zone. “I literally want to cry and go back for all my stuff. I just got what I thought I needed,” Delatorre said.
Saturday’s fire caught many off guard, as it coincided with another fire burning in the area for two weeks. Teresa Lenshyn, one of the evacuees, described the evacuation process as chaotic and stressful, with uncertainty about the wind’s impact.
This marks the third significant wildfire near Reno in two weeks, with human activity cited as a cause in each instance. Drought and extremely dry conditions have contributed to numerous wildfires across the American West this summer.
Earlier in August, wildfires prompted the evacuation of 60,000 people in eastern Washington’s Spokane area. Nationwide, more than 50,000 wildfires have been reported, making it the highest number in the past 10 years according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
