Heartwarming Discovery in Thrift Store Leads to Unforeseen Connection

A woman in Minnesota encountered an unexpected connection when she discovered a note inside a book she bought at a local thrift store. Michelle, residing in Minneapolis, told Newsweek that she stumbled upon the note by chance.

“I was browsing my local thrift store, found a book I wanted, and when I got home, I noticed handwritten notes tucked inside,” Michelle shared with the publication.

The note started with a handwritten affirmation: “I am smart. I am calm. I’ve worked hard to prepare. I’ve got this.” It included a series of MCAT scores, showcasing a journey of improvement from practice scores of 515, 519, and 523 to actual exam results of 525 and 528. The note also contained a detailed tracker of medical school applications, interviews, acceptances, and rejections.

Several top schools, such as Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, the University of Iowa, and Creighton University, accepted the applicant, while others were marked as rejections.

While reading through the note, Michelle realized it chronicled someone’s path through the medical school application process. There was a humorous self-reflective question asking if the writer liked people enough to pursue a career as a doctor, followed by a backup plan to explore veterinary medicine programs.

“It felt like finding a little time capsule of someone else’s life,” Michelle said, reflecting on the hard work and self-encouragement documented in the note.

The uniqueness of finding such a note transformed into something even more meaningful. Michelle uploaded a picture of the note on Reddit, under the username lemonspriggs, where it gained significant attention with over 7,500 upvotes. The post soon led to an unexpected revelation.

Michelle received a surprising message starting with, “This is so surreal … that’s my note.” The original note writer had detected the post, thanks to her husband recognizing the notes. She created a Reddit account to express her emotions. “To my complete surprise, she found the post,” Michelle recounted. “Her husband identified the notes and shared them with her. Hearing the rest of her story added a special layer to the experience.”

The woman explained to Michelle that she had forgotten about the note she had left inside the book before donating it. “I used to place little affirmations in my textbooks due to MCAT anxiety,” she wrote in her response. “Seeing ‘I’ve worked hard to prepare. I’ve got this.’ instantly took me back to that phase of my life.”

Now 34, the woman revealed that her path diverged after becoming a doctor. Rather than pursuing clinical practice, she opted to specialize in infectious diseases. “I study zoonotic diseases, focusing on preventing and understanding those affecting both animals and humans,” she said. “I manage a research lab and collaborate with farmers on biodefense and emerging infectious disease issues. It feels like this is where I was meant to end up!”

She expressed gratitude to Michelle for sharing the note and allowing her to “reconnect with a younger version” of herself who faced fear but persevered.

“Keep going,” she advised anyone studying for the MCAT or pursuing a dream that seems distant. “One day you’ll reflect and see how those long nights, small successes, and personal affirmations made it all worthwhile,” she encouraged.
