At least 40 people have drowned in France over the last five days during a severe heat wave, according to Sébastien Lecornu, the country’s prime minister. The announcement was made during an emergency cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
The victims, primarily young people and many teenagers, drowned while swimming in unsupervised areas. Lecornu described the situation as a “tragic scourge.”
Marina Ferrari, a government minister responsible for youth affairs, emphasized the dangers of swimming in unsupervised locations during such heat events. On French radio, she noted, “During heat waves like this, it’s no small matter to go swimming in areas that aren’t supervised.”
France is currently experiencing an intense heat wave that has spread across much of Europe since mid-last week. Forecasters indicate that temperatures in Paris could reach up to 40 degrees Celsius this week. In some central regions, temperatures could climb to 43 degrees Celsius (around 109 degrees Fahrenheit).
More than half of France has been placed under a red alert for severe heat wave conditions by Météo-France, the nation’s weather agency. They predict “exceptionally high temperatures, both day and night,” which may have significant health effects. Lecornu stated, “All the records, locally or nationally, are being broken every day or night when it comes to temperatures.”
The current heat wave is driven by a “heat dome,” a potent high-pressure zone trapping heat over the region. According to Météo-France, these systems can block or redirect weather fronts, resulting in minimal cloud cover and scarce rainfall.
This heat wave marks the second such event in France in about a month, following record temperatures in May.
The extreme heat has also led to other tragic losses. BFMTV, a French news station, reported that two young children, ages 2 and 4, died after being left inside a vehicle on Monday.
