Three individuals stranded on a steep mountainside in Northern California were rescued by helicopter after a distress signal alerted authorities. The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office coordinated the rescue operation on the Sierra Buttes, located near a lookout tower close to the mountain summit.
The situation unfolded when a Garmin inReach satellite device sent an SOS signal at approximately 2:30 p.m. The alert reached the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, prompting a swift response. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Mountain Rescue Team and Washoe County Sheriff’s Office RAVEN helicopter crew were deployed.
Rescuers located the group on challenging terrain. A rescue team member was lowered from the helicopter to secure the individuals. Afterwards, they were safely hoisted up and transported to a nearby landing zone where Sierra County deputies awaited their arrival.
The sheriff’s office emphasized the necessity of a helicopter hoist rescue due to the rugged landscape and hazardous conditions. The operation underscored the importance of coordination and professionalism among the involved teams, who were commended for their expertise and successful completion of the mission.
The Sierra Buttes rise over the North Yuba River canyon and stand at an elevation of about 8,600 feet, noted by the Pacific Crest Trail Association. Specifics on how the individuals became stranded or their condition were not provided.
Social media users applauded the rescue, acknowledging the RAVEN helicopter team’s assistance. Comments highlighted the value of such dedicated units in regional emergencies. Praise extended to the effective teamwork and resilience demonstrated throughout the challenging operation.
In recent weeks, Northern California has seen several similar rescues. A Florida man sustained severe injuries after a fall on the Whitney Glacier but was successfully transported to a medical facility. Additionally, two young adults from Salt Lake City were rescued after a lengthy ordeal on Mount Shasta, both unharmed.
