Helping a Partner Let Go of Long-Held Possessions
Dear Eric: My husband and I are retired, celebrating 29 years of marriage. Over the last few years, he has shown a strong reluctance to part with his belongings.
About five years ago, we decided to downsize our home. During this process, I managed to convince him to part with some coats he no longer wore. However, beyond those few items, he has been steadfast about keeping everything else.
As we age, maintaining a clutter-free home becomes increasingly important. It ensures safety and peace of mind. It’s often difficult to let go of things with sentimental value or what seem ‘might be useful someday.’
To encourage change, we could approach this challenge sensitively. Open conversations about why certain items are worth keeping can lead to understanding. Finding common ground on what’s truly necessary might ease the process.
In some cases, professional help from an organizer can offer a neutral perspective. These experts can assist in sorting through items efficiently without the emotional attachment that might hinder progress.
Ultimately, compassion and patience play crucial roles in supporting each other through adjustments that life demands.
