ACC Champions and the CFP
Rhett Lashlee took a moment to acknowledge the Duke Blue Devils for their victory in the 2025 ACC Championship. Lashlee expressed his belief that the ACC champion deserved a spot in the CFP, highlighting that future rules will ensure each Power 4 conference champion receives automatic entry. During the media session, Lashlee made reference to “a team from the Sun Belt,” which many interpreted as James Madison University (JMU). JMU had secured a CFP spot under the previous year’s qualifying rules, which awarded automatic bids to the five highest-ranked conference champions. By contrast, the Duke Blue Devils were unranked following conference championship week. Lashlee’s comments suggested that the 2025 Duke team, having lost to Tulane and UConn, may not have deserved their title as much as others.
His remarks prompted a backlash from JMU fans, who voiced their displeasure on social media. It’s unlikely that Lashlee will be warmly received in Rockingham County.
