Historic Cleaning Underway at Athens’ Panathenaic Stadium

Athens’ Panathenaic Stadium, an iconic structure made entirely of sleek white marble, is undergoing its first thorough cleaning in over a hundred years. This colossal task is being performed in preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, where the stadium will again serve as the ceremonial send-off point for the Olympic flame.

A Historical Marvel

The structure, rebuilt for the modern Olympics in 1896, boasts the same type of dazzling marble used for the Acropolis. This makes the cleaning process particularly delicate. The team employs low-pressure clean water to gently scrub the stadium’s 47 steep tiers. White and blue-clad cleaners use thin spray lances, while machines meticulously vacuum the runoff.

The cleaning reveals changes in the monument caused by time, weather conditions, and the millions of visitors it has welcomed. Workers are removing layers of dirt that have accumulated over decades. According to Dimitris Selemis, a senior conservator, the goal is not to bleach the marble white but to remove surface impurities.

Challenges Faced

The stadium has grappled with various issues, such as chewing gum, high heels, and soft drink stains, which have marred the stunning marble over the years. Special steam treatments help to eliminate these blemishes. The original shining look of the stadium, known as “Kallimarmaro” or beautiful marble, is gradually being restored.

Isidoros Kouvelos, president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, expressed enormous pride in the stadium’s architectural significance. He emphasized the importance of the cleanup to highlight its historical value and beauty.

Avenue for Various Events

The Panathenaic Stadium’s location is a site with ancient roots, initially used for Greek athletic contests and Roman spectacles. Post its 1896 revival, it has hosted various events, from fashion shows and concerts to boxing matches and national celebrations.

Today, efforts to improve the stadium include the installation of a new track, upgraded lighting, and enhanced facilities. A shipping company funds this project, with oversight from the Hellenic Olympic Committee and advice from Culture Ministry experts.

Upcoming Ceremonies

Restoration efforts are concentrated on the stadium’s curved end, or ‘sling’, to prepare it for the next torch-passing ceremony on Sept. 10. This event will precede the Dakar Youth Olympics, slated for Oct. 31-Nov. 13 in Senegal. Notably, this will be Africa’s first Olympic competition. The ceremony will be attended by IOC President Kirsty Coventry, an accomplished swimmer from Zimbabwe.
