Michigan Stadium, known as the Big House, is adding advertisements to its iconic structure for the first time in nearly a century of college football history. This Wednesday, Michigan revealed its initial trio of sponsors: Coca-Cola, Meijer, and Google Gemini. These brands will soon display their logos within the 107,601-seat venue.
According to Austin Meek of The Athletic, the school shared renderings of the advertisements’ placements on the stadium. The logos will feature on the sides of the video board, the base wall of the stands, and the south-side national championship sign.
Michigan spokesman Dave Ablauf mentioned that these logos will integrate into other in-stadium experiences, including video board programming. While other brand logos have appeared in the stadium before, they weren’t placed on the structure itself. Examples include the Allstate logo on the nets behind goal posts and the Gatorade logo on sideline hydration gear. Player equipment also bears the Jordan jumpman logo.
Warde Manuel, Michigan’s athletic director, emphasized the importance of maintaining the stadium’s tradition and character. “We are introducing this partner program with care and purpose, ensuring that any brand partner presence is strategic, tasteful, and aligned with the values of the University of Michigan,” Manuel stated.
This move toward in-stadium advertising aligns with a broader trend across college sports. Teams increasingly use sponsor patches on jerseys and sell naming rights to generate revenue. Despite schools like Michigan traditionally valuing heritage and resisting commercial influences, the financial demands of building competitive rosters are significant. Eventually, even prominent programs like Michigan must find financial solutions that uphold tradition while embracing necessary commercial partnerships.
