The opening match of the World Cup in Mexico City showcased an unusual occurrence in international soccer. Three players received red cards, marking the first time since 2006 that such an event took place. The notable match between Portugal and the Netherlands in 2006 set a record with four red cards.
During the recent match at Azteca Stadium, South African players Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane, along with César Montes of Mexico, were sent off. This marks the first instance of three players being given straight red cards during an opening World Cup match. Mexico secured a 2-0 victory.
Sithole was dismissed early in the second half for a foul on Mexico’s Brian Gutierrez near the box. Later, Zwane was expelled following a video review that highlighted his strike on Roberto Alvarado in the 84th minute. Montes’ dismissal came in stoppage time after a challenge on Khuliso Mudau.
The red cards result in a suspension for at least one more match for Sithole, Zwane, and Montes. South Africa’s subsequent match will be against the Czech Republic, while Mexico will face off against South Korea in Guadalajara.
The 2006 World Cup match between Portugal and the Netherlands is remembered for its intense display of 16 yellow cards alongside the four red cards issued.
